South Bend Modern Molding is a privately held corporation that has been in business since 1942. We support our customers by producing their custom rubber products as well as providing our customers with stock items and overseas pricing solutions. Everything we do is aimed at satisfying our customers and for over sixty years we have attained this goal.
In June of 2004 we achieved certification to the ISO/TS-16949 quality standard and have implemented the procedures in every facet of our operation. Our customer base is diverse with concentrations in major appliance, automotive, transportation, electrical, military, power tools, construction, and power transmission industries. The majority of our sales are to companies listed among Fortune's 500 largest industrial companies. Our presses range in size from 50 ton with 12" platens to 500 tons with 30" x 40" platens. We utilize transfer, compression, and injection molding techniques and have recently added new machinery that allows us to produce lathe cut and die cut parts. This type of press diversity along with our overseas manufacturing partners allows us to take on a variety of part configurations and sizes. We have rubber chemists on staff to advise our customers in specifying the best material for their particular application. We also have engineers on staff to advise our customers on tool design and on the most economical design from a molding standpoint. We support prototype quantities through production quantities and when it is possible, we like to be involved in the development of new parts to help with material selection and manufacturability. We mold all conventional thermoset elastomers and have experience with many exotic polymers. About 35% of our current product mix is either rubber-bonded to metal or insert molded parts. Our expertise in all aspects of rubber molding allows us to be a full service supplier. In June of 1998 we relocated our operations into a 100,000 square foot facility with an additional 120,000 square foot property behind our building for future growth. Our new facility is nearly five times larger than our previous building and this has allowed us to increase our capabilities and to grow our company. With the additional space in our new building we now offer assembly operations to our customers. With our old technology compression and transfer presses, our new technology injection presses, our lathe-cut and die-cut abilities, our assembly operations, and our off-shore manufacturing capabilities we are now a full service rubber shop to all of our current and potential customers.
